Amarok Up-Plating 6400KG
After months of development we have decided to no longer pursue the 7000KG up-plating service due to lack of communication and assistance from the VSA.
However, we can still offer a simple upgrade service to up plate the Amarok to 6400GTW. Using a normal hitch the towing capacity is increased to 3.5T from the stock 3.1T with this service. This is all possible on a Normal Licence - B + E (3500kg + Trailer).
A 2020 V6 weighs roughly 2300kg with 1/2 Tank of fuel depending on specification, with a Maximum allowable Mass (MAM) of 3290kg. The 6400kg service does not increase the pickups carrying capacity at full towing load, only when towing lighter trailer could you utilise the increased entire MAM of 3500kg.
The 6400kg uprate is fairly straightforward with the installation of a rear semi air suspension kit and and application to the DVLA to produce a new chassis plate for the vehicle.
Costs are from around £1500+ VAT to £2300+ VAT depending upon the suspension specification chosen, either Manual system or Fully Automatic self levelling.
The rear air suspension has a certificate of no objection from VW, so warranty is still preserved when installing. The up-plating itself might cause issues, so this should be checked with your local dealer.
The 6400kg conversion is also available for all 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI (Manual & Auto) Amaroks.
Hopefully the below table and image is a simpler way to explain, this is all considering V6 Amarok with ½ Tank fuel and no driver:
Standard | 6.4 Tonne |
Max Vehicle weight
3290kg | 3500kg |
Max Tow Weight (Hitch)
3100kg | 3500kg |
GTW (Gross Train Weight)
6000kg | 6400kg |
Est Vehicle Payload
990kg | 1200kg |
Est 5th Wheel Tow Capacity
- N/A - | 4100kg |
Payload at full tow Capacity
600kg | 600kg |
The payload of the truck itself is increased by as much as 600kg when towing at full capacity, as you don't need to eat into the GTW like you would when at the factory 6T limit. Most pickups on the market that can tow more than the Amarok are very poor in this regard, as most still have the 6000kg limit. This means even with an empty bed and a couple of passengers, they would be overweight towing a 3.5T trailer! The 6400kg up-plate is a nice middle ground that will suit most Amarok owners
We would need the vehicle for up to 2 days and need your full V5 Document, 3-4 weeks after the conversion we will send your V5 for the new values to be added and forward a new weight plate to install.

Standard | 6.4 Tonne |
Front Axle
1445kg | 1445kg |
Rear Axle
1930kg | 2200kg |
The new 2200kg rear axle weight is actually 20kg more than the standard '111' load rating the factory fitted tyres would allow, one option is to never exceed the 1090kg each tyre can take or swap to a 112 rated tyre or above. Our Amarok has 120 rear and 117 rated front tyres which gives a huge margin for error and is unnecessary!

Another point to consider is the towball itself, the factory setup usually has a D-Value of 16.4kN, to legally tow 3.5tons with a vehicle weighing 3.5T we recommend a minimum D-Value of 17.2kN, we now have these listed on our website here - 2 Bolt Flange Towball for 3500kg
We have many handling and brake upgrades listed on our site. We can also offer tuning packages from 300hp to beyond 400hp! We advise at least a custom re-map to make the most from this conversion. We regularly tow at full capacity with our own Amarok and are very impressed with its capabilities.
