DIESEL RACE CAR? Walkaround - 1.9 TDI PD130 SEAT IBIZA

So we have been posting about our Ibiza's racing and trackday exploits for a number of years now, but we have never really explained the reasons behind the choices we have made, until now!

The full Spec can be viewed here - https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/ibiza-fr-mk4-6l-1-9-8v-asz-track-race-car/

We have already made a blog post on PD Engine Hardware Engines, and we have a Wheel Alignment / Tracking page with all the various Geometry settings we measure and tweak on the Track Cars.

Even through Ryan was rambling on for a good 30 minutes, he completely missed off everything about the Gearbox!

Clutch Upgrades

When it comes to a clutch, it is always a good idea to make sure it is plenty strong enough for your needs. For a road car, an Organic Disc is the best option, as the material is able to withstand slipping in traffic situations. A sintered disc is perfect for racing / track applications where the strongest hold is required, and a little harshness on set off can be accepted.
We also have a Braided Clutch Line to increase pedal feel when the fluid gets hot during a hard session.

Differential Upgrades

In our Ibiza, as it is used for Track only, we run a Plated LSD. As this requires maintenance, for road cars, a Helical Diff such as the Quaife are probably a better option. We have a blog post on Limited Slip Differentials that is well worth a read.

Case Mods

These are to stop the case flexing, and therefore allowing the gears to spread. 4th Gear is especially prone to this, so the 4th Gear support bolts to the casing and pushes onto the 4th Gear Shaft, reducing the risk of the gears spreading and stripping.

Forks

There are 2 paths with the forks, strengthen the originals:

Or change to full steel for the 1st-2nd and 3rd-4th Forks. These forks are Genuine VAG parts, found in the later boxes. Some customers have seen wear on the plastic sliders, so SQS make bronze versions to replace them. There is no Steel 5th-6th or Reverse Fork, but you can upgrade the shifter element

Shifter

For the Shifter, you can go crazy with the Sequential, but if you stick to Manual, we have some good upgrades for a Short Shift, and then to stiffen up the linkage mechanism.
