Description
Pierburg CWA Electric Waterpump - CWA 400
This upgrade is great for Track Car and Motorsport applications but can also be used on road applications Pierburg were one of the first to introduce the electric water pump to line production for BMW in 2004 They and others are now widely available in the aftermarket and got many advantages over conventional mechanical pumps Some of which are the freedom of installation and the independence of engine revolutions Also the pumps are very well built and with its brushless canned motor they are practical maintenance free (plus it looks like a turbo!!)Specifications:
Supply voltage: 8-16 VoltCurrent consumption: max. 36A in operation and 0,2mA in standby modeDifferential pressure: 0.85 barFlow rate: 150l/min @ 0.85bar / 220l/min @ 0.55bar
Advantages of electric water pumps:
The best benefit for aftermarket and motorsport application would be the freedom of installation and use
You can mount the pump practically anywhere (yes even in the trunk) and it is completely independent of the engines revolutions
Most of the cooling power is needed when the car is idling around in a complete standstill
Sadly that’s the situation where a mechanical water pump got its least amount of power
So most of the time a conventional pump is oversupplying the engine with coolant flow
The Electric Water Pumps however can deliver the right amount of flow at any time it is needed
Important Information:
These Pumps were previously able to be controlled by PWM (Pulse Width Modulation)
Towards the middle of 2024 the CWA 400 version has been changed to CWA 400+ and these have the LIN control. The electronics have been changed and are interchangeable with the previous version.
When installing these water pumps the conventional mechanical pump will need blanking and replacing with an idle pulley. Addition coolant hoses / pipes will be needed depending on where you decide to mount the new pumpWe have fitted these Electric Water Pumps to the following Project Cars:
